Start-up Nation: The Story of Israel's Economic Miracle Overview
START-UP NATION addresses the trillion dollar question: How is it that Israel-- a country of 7.1 million, only 60 years old, surrounded by enemies, in a constant state of war since its founding, with no natural resources-- produces more start-up companies than large, peaceful, and stable nations like Japan, China, India, Korea, Canada and the UK?
With the savvy of foreign policy insiders, Senor and Singer examine the lessons of the country's adversity-driven culture, which flattens hierarchy and elevates informality-- all backed up by government policies focused on innovation. In a world where economies as diverse as

Almost exactly a year ago, my phone rang. "Hello, this is Dan Senor. I'm writing a book about the influence of the military to the economy in Israel. I was told that as part of my research, I had to talk to you. And 'This is a good time to talk? " And so I started my work with the watershed book "Start-up Nation: The Story of Israel's economic miracle."
Dan Senor said he had no contact with me - because I do not know anything about the Israeli economy - but because I have a strongOpinions on how U.S. military veterans are consequences - and will have an impact in the future - the U.S. economy. Lord and his collaborator, Saul Singer, is a book that I am now a "must read" for anyone who has written an interest in innovation and entrepreneurship. For almost any reasonable metric, the Israeli economy has developed the most innovative in the world. This book explains the complex reasons for this success story is unlikely.
Carefully negotiated and reasonedconvincing case studies, Mr. Singer and tell an exciting story about the unique qualities that allow the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) veterans to a very high level in the business world. Some of the factors that describe in detail to understand the process by which promising Israeli high school students selected and trained the elite military units, the unique feeling of camaraderie that has developed in these units is done by years of reserve military service thatAvailability Question Authority, and the sense of urgency that is a part of daily life in Israel.
Early in the book, the authors compare these features with the armed forces of the United States:
"The former West Point professor Fred Kagan acknowledges that Americans can learn something from the Israelis." I do not think it will be healthy for a commander constantly thinking, is subject to go over his head, as they do about the Israeli army, "he said." On the other hand, the United StatesMilitary force of a kind 360-degree evaluation process of promoting the benefits of council officers. At this moment in our system, the incentives are all one-way. To get promoted, and an officer needs to ask only for senior officers. junior boys get any input, ' "(page 53)
A culture that a diligent commitment to a thorough debriefing covers every aspect of performance is a characteristic of Israeli culture that has its roots in the common experience of many Israeli IDFEntrepreneurs
"Air Force Israeli Yuval Dotan is also a graduate of Harvard Business School. When he comes to Apollo vs. Columbia," he was of the opinion that NASA has its roots exploration, foam strike was identified and discussed seriously in their daily "debriefing . Elite military unit in Israel, every day is an experiment. And every day ends with a hard session where everyone in the department deconstruct - any degree - to sit a day, no matter whatHappening on the battlefield or in the world. "Debriefing is as important as the drill or the fight live," he told us. Each flight training, simulation and real operation, such as laboratory work is treated, studied and reviewed [to be] successful - and heated - debate. Here's how it was formed "(pages 93-94)
Leave it to me, the evidence of the men of the Renaissance to see the workplace and cross-sectoral thinking "in operation, since the behavior Israeli businessthemselves. Here's an example:
"I was working on a project with creative art, a graduate of Bezalel. He looked the part - long hair, an earring, wearing shorts and flip flops. Suddenly he burst a technological problem. I was ready to call a technician to resolve the problem. Bezalel But students, had the graphics work and start solving the problem, as was a technical expert. I asked him where he learned to do it. It turns out that he was a fighter pilot in the Air Force. This artStudent? A fighter pilot? E 'as all the worlds collide here - or together - depending on how you look. "(Page 183)
The authors compare the performance of the Israeli system of education, to strengthen the promotion in question, that of the neighboring Arab countries, where storage is the model
for the class:
"The emphasis on standardization of an education policy which, instead of the success of inputs defined on the results scored. ForFor example, according to a study by the offices of the Gulf of McKinsey & Company, Arab governments have found with the number of teachers and consummate investments in infrastructure - construction of computers, and now - in hopes of improving the performance of their students. But the results of the latest trends in International Mathematics and Science Study Weight Saudi students dreiundvierzigter of forty years. "(Page 213)
Israelis are focused on results in relation to the priorities of the Arab world upstreamreminds me of a recent conversation with my friend, Vice Admiral USN (Ret.), Wally Massenburg. While he was in charge Naval Aviation, has prompted a paradigm shift in the marine community to start the measurement of outcomes rather than inputs, and the results were dramatic. At the end of his career, had a tradition linked the U.S. Navy in an institution rather than "Naval Aviation Company announced transformed."
I have not touched with all the details on the results of my conversation with DanSenor. Had the courtesy to include some quotes from this interview in one of the chapters book'ss. The IPO will be the subject of a future separate blog post.
I recommend this book to all those who listen. If you have any of innovation in any way, you'll find challenge and inspiration in the pages of this book and to describe the practice in Israeli start-ups.
Enjoy.
