A Patriot's History of the United States: From Columbus's Great Discovery to the War on Terror

A Patriot's History of the United States: From Columbus's Great Discovery to the War on Terror Feature

A Patriot's History of the United States: From Columbus's Great Discovery to the War on Terror Overview

For the past three decades, many history professors have allowed their biases to distort the way America’s past is taught. These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism, and bigotry in our history while downplaying the greatness of America’s patriots and the achievements of "dead white men."

As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington; more about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II than about D-Day or Iwo Jima; more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin.

A Patriot’s History of the United States corrects those doctrinaire biases. In this groundbreaking book, America’s discovery, founding, and development are reexamined with an appreciation for the elements of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that make this nation uniquely successful. This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America’s true and proud history.

Winter Garden Overview

Can a woman ever really know herself if she doesn’t know her mother?

From the author of the smash-hit bestseller
Firefly Lane and True Colors comes a powerful, heartbreaking novel that illuminates the intricate mother-daughter bond and explores the enduring links between the present and the past

Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters. As children, the only connection between them was the Russian fairy tale Anya sometimes told the girls at night. On his deathbed, their father extracts a promise from the women in his life: the fairy tale will be told one last time—and all the way to the end. Thus begins an unexpected journey into the truth of Anya’s life in war-torn Leningrad, more than five decades ago. Alternating between the past and present, Meredith and Nina will finally hear the singular, harrowing story of their mother’s life, and what they learn is a secret so terrible and terrifying that it will shake the very foundation of their family and change who they believe they are.

Customer Reviews

Winter Garden is another Hannah Kristen "interest grabber" - is to write a character that is drawn right into the story. I can not wait until I get some extra time to sit down again and again in this story, which is my interest to have. The sisters and their relationship with their mother, their children, their spouses and friends of many years is fascinating. The background history of Russian experience is not so much as a background for the main action.
I loved this book!

A Week in December

A Week in December Feature

  • ISBN13: 9780385532914
  • Condition: NEW
  • Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark.

A Week in December Overview

From the author of the bestselling Birdsong comes a powerful novel that melds the moral heft of Dickens and the scrupulous realism of Trollope with the satirical spirit of Tom Wolfe.

London: the week before Christmas, 2007. Over seven days we follow the lives of seven major characters: a hedge fund manager trying to bring off the biggest trade of his career; a professional footballer recently arrived from Poland; a young lawyer with little work and too much time to speculate; a student who has been led astray by Islamist theory; a hack book reviewer; a schoolboy hooked on reality TV and genetically altered pot; and a Tube train driver whose Circle Line train joins these and countless other lives together in a daily loop.

With daring skill and savage humor, A Week in December explores the complex patterns and crossings of modern urban life; as the novel moves to its gripping climax, its characters are forced, one by one, to confront the true nature of the world they—and we all—inhabit.

Customer Reviews

A week of December, is a tour de force that provides high entertainment value and provocative ideas. 'S so beautiful a "novel just published, as I read in the last five years.

First, the conversation: The novel presents a dozen main characters (and two dozen other secondary) in four major inter-related stories (and a handful of secondary) are involved in this development and convergence with a week of December - - in particular, 16. December by22nd December 2008. The interior is modern, multicultural London (where now 75% of births to mothers who were not born in the United Kingdom). The great stories are born global financial services coup was to wrest billions of pounds for a hedge fund at the expense of a major British bank and the financial burden of millions of pensioners, farm workers subsistence-level African and (of course) the taxpayers Islamic terrorist plot, the descent into psychosis by 16 yearsThe son of a billionaire financier, with easy access to £ 700 for marijuana GM and touching and improbable love story. The story unfolds and intertwines the stories and sent this very minor, creating a faster disk than a week, and the stories that takes place towards its dissolution. All this makes a novel set heavy.

Now for ideas: one week in December has examined topics such as Islam and terrorism,Alice in Wonderland world of high finance in the last thirty years, with its exotic financial instruments and the unbridled greed, the penetration of the Internet world of virtual reality to the reality of "real life" schizophrenia, dumbing down of education in the West, and total rudeness and superficiality of the "culture" in the UK (and this list represents only the tip of the iceberg).

For example, in relation to Islam, the more thoughtful characters Faulksreflected in the novel as follows: "As soon as an initial theological debate, once and for all that the Qur'an was literally and in every syllable, the unmediated word of God chosen, therefore, by definition, all Muslims," fundamentalist "was . It was his nature, in contrast with Judaism or Christianity, it is inside, and rather apologetic, a fundamentalist religion. There was, of course, a world of difference between 'fundamental' and 'militant' - much less " aggressive ", but the truth nonehas remained constant: that, so pure, so generous and so uncompromising that Islam was the kind of believers say it could be limited. "

Another example to do with the company's approach to knowledge and education: "In pre-modern society the goal of people was simply to keep what he had learned not to lose it." But in the twentieth century, Western society, especially in Europe, had adopted the goal of universal education and a net profit of knowledge among all those who, from generation toGeneration. * * "It is now abandoned as a destination. * From now on there will be a net loss of knowledge in Europe. The difference between a peasant community in the fourteenth century, Iran and modern London, but when she and its scarce resources, the villagers occasionally slipped back, it was not for lack of trying. But we, here in England, was a positive choice. We decided that we know less. "

Reading a week in December is almost effortless. And 'writtenTime and twisted with humor and compassion. Some of the characters are stereotypical in nature, but this is probably the inevitable product of the way of parody, often at the forefront in the novel. I doubt that the novel, the impact of twenty, so that now, so that probably will not be classified as "great literature". But it is so funny and thoughtful as I could expect from a novel topical.

This story is about a girl (Alfried, aka Allie), who lives with her mother is pretty useless in a small camper trailer on property owned by his uncle. You are electric shock and beatings in a bull grazing in time for the bull to his office. But suddenly you think of the wide support of the bull and I understood. From there you get stranger and stranger world than she receives a necklace of moonstone from his friend Kizzy and start things even crazier. Kizzy gets up and takes place in their path, an unexpectedHelps his friend. From there we have the possible introduction of a cute love interest in Junior. Dig for clues together and find things difficult. Not to know that trust and that you are in a battle to save the mother's life. A struggle for a bit absent father ', but indirectly, offering to meet them after 15 years do not worry. Like this story is going?

As the first of this series was pretty good. I found that theflow of the book was good and I also like Junior and Allie, and also Corey. There were times that things seemed rushed, but overall, at least it was not bugged with too many details. I would definitely recommend and look forward to reading the next line.

The Little Big Things: 163 Ways to Pursue EXCELLENCE Overview

#131 The Case of the Two-Cent Candy

Years ago, I wrote about a retail store in the Palo Alto environs—a good one, which had a box of two-cent candies at the checkout. I subsequently remember that "little" parting gesture of the two-cent candy as a symbol of all that is Excellent at that store. Dozens of people who have attended seminars of mine—from retailers to bankers to plumbing-supply-house owners—have come up to remind me, sometimes 15 or 20 years later, of "the two-cent candy story," and to tell me how it had a sizable impact on how they did business, metaphorically and in fact.

Well, the Two-Cent Candy Phenomenon has struck again—with oomph and in the most unlikely of places.

For years Singapore's "brand" has more or less been Southeast Asia's "place that works." Its legendary operational efficiency in all it does has attracted businesses of all sorts to set up shop there. But as "the rest" in the geographic neighborhood closed the efficiency gap, and China continued to rise-race-soar, Singapore decided a couple of years ago to "rebrand" itself as not only a place that works but also as an exciting, "with it" city. (I was a participant in an early rebranding conference that also featured the likes of the late Anita Roddick, Deepak Chopra, and Infosys founder and superman N. R. Narayana Murthy.)

Singapore's fabled operating efficiency starts, as indeed it should, at ports of entry—the airport being a prime example. From immigration to baggage claim to transportation downtown, the services are unmatched anywhere in the world for speed and efficiency.

Saga . . .

Immigration services in Thailand, three days before a trip to Singapore, were a pain. ("Memorable.") And entering Russia some months ago was hardly a walk in the park, either. To be sure, and especially after 9/11, entry to the United States has not been a process you'd mistake for arriving at Disneyland, nor marked by an attitude that shouted "Welcome, honored guest."

Singapore immigration services, on the other hand:

The entry form was a marvel of simplicity.

The lines were short, very short, with more than adequate staffing.

The process was simple and unobtrusive.

And:

The immigration officer could have easily gotten work at Starbucks; she was all smiles and courtesy.

And:

Yes!

Yes!

And . . . yes!

There was a little candy jar at each Immigration portal!

The "candy jar message" in a dozen ways:

"Welcome to Singapore, Tom!! We are absolutely beside ourselves with delight that you have decided to come here!"

Wow!

Wow!

Wow!

Ask yourself . . . now:

What is my (personal, department, project, restaurant, law firm) "Two-Cent Candy"?

Does every part of the process of working with us/me include two-cent candies?

Do we, as a group, "think two-cent candies"?

Operationalizing: Make "two-centing it" part and parcel of "the way we do business around here." Don't go light on the so-called substance—but do remember that . . . perception is reality . . . and perception is shaped by two-cent candies as much as by that so-called hard substance.

Start: Have your staff collect "two-cent candy stories" for the next two weeks in their routine "life" transactions. Share those stories. Translate into "our world." And implement.

Repeat regularly.

Forever.

(Recession or no recession—you can afford two cents.)

(In fact, it is a particularly Brilliant Idea for a recession—you doubtless don't maximize Two-Cent Opportunities. And what opportunities they are.)

Since 2004, Tom Peters began a series on his blog called "Success Tips". accumulated over the next five years, has 176 tips and Harper Studio contacted him about taking advice and converts them into a book. The Little Big Things: 163 ways to pursue excellence is the result of these efforts.

Would be misleading to describe a terrible Little Big Things as a collection of blog posts. The titration can be every bit at a time, it was like something else, but all weretranscribed and edited and re-written and edited some more.

I'm going to tell all this trouble, because many will say go, this is just a rehash of things will have heard of Tom.

"Excellence is the subtitle for gosh sake!"

And the answer is yes. This sounds familiar.
Codes are stamped by the crazy book.
exclamation points abound.
The great big bold type appears on almost every page.
TheBook is classic Tom Peters.

"What's new?"

No, and should not be.

"Why?"

Because we do not hear ... no, do not act, do anything different than yesterday or last week or three years ago when everything went well.

We have no SWPs rent (the seriously weird).
We do not read enough.
We do not serve the people.
We do not make enough WOW.
We are not doing enough NOW.
And it is alwayssome lame reason.

Tom was always the past that he was the lame reason. If you think there is nothing holding you back and just do really cool things that everyone loves on the planet, Little Big Things is not for you.

When the slightest possibility that you can think of someone a little push, or read something exciting could help, then this book is for you.

My experience is that people fall into one of these two fields.
Find a Camp.
You will know what to do.

Customer Reviews

This book was absolutely hands down the best book on food I bought from my culinary textbooks. I cook all the time, it is not my task, and is more than a hobby ... And I was recently started to feel that my tastes and dishes fell flat, boring and monotonous. So I bought this book hoping it will improve in all these ways, oh God! done. My favorite part of the book is the beginning, when you break all the flavor components that a court must makereally set the pop delights from world-renowned chefs as they came with these ideas in their courts. And finally, does the rest of the ingredients and the book under each, list what flavors go really well with them. Helped me a lot in my kitchen my flattering compliments from family and friends back! I refer to him all the time. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a bit 'more adventurous with their food.

I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell (movie tie-in): with 16 page photo insert Overview

My name is Tucker Max, and I am an asshole. I get excessively drunk at inappropriate times, disregard social norms, indulge every whim, ignore the consequences of my actions, mock idiots and posers, sleep with more women than is safe or reasonable, and just generally act like a raging dickhead. But, I do contribute to humanity in one very important way: I share my adventures with the world. —from the Introduction Actual reader feedback:

"I am completely baffled as to how you can congratulate yourself for being a womanizer and a raging drunk, or think anyone cares about an idiot like you. Do you really think that exploiting the insecurities of others while getting wasted is a legitimate thing to offer?"

"Thank you, thank you, thank you—for sharing with us your wonderful tales of drunken revelry, for teaching me what it means to be a man, for just existing so I know that there is another option; I too can say ‘screw the system’ and be myself and have fun. My life truly began when I finished reading your stories. Now, when faced with a quandary about what course of action I should take, I just ask myself, ‘What Would Tucker Do?’—and I do it, and I am a better man for it."

"I find it truly appalling that there are people in the world like you. You are a disgusting, vile, repulsive, repugnant, foul creature. Because of you, I don’t believe in God anymore. No just God would allow someone like you to exist."

"I’ll stay with God as my lord, but you are my savior. I just finished reading your brilliant stories, and I laughed so hard I almost vomited. I want to bring that kind of joy to people. You’re an artist of the highest order and a true humanitarian to boot. I'm in both shock and awe at how much I want to be you."

"You are the coolest person I can even imagine existing. If you slept with my girlfriend, it'd make me love her more."

Customer Reviews

It's good. It 'was refreshing to a "balls out" vulgar apologetics book on sex and depravity read details.

Is not the best written book I ever read, but it is easy to read. It is not poetry, but a stream. Other than the occasional big word here and there, writes almost as one would expect to see him when he says that these stories were in person ... and the quality is that I can really appreciate a writer.

He is definitely a prick. It will not beI agree with almost everything he does, and he'll get on my nerves sometimes .... but I would put the book in the hand. I bought on Saturday, finished Tuesday .... and I'm just a casual reader, so that says a lot.

It's worth the $ 13 I spent on it. Recommended for people with black humor, which is not simply to offend.

  • Condition: NEW
  • Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark.

On the Brink: Inside the Race to Stop the Collapse of the Global Financial System Overview

Fast-paced and dramatic re-telling of the financial crisis that nearly bought the developed world to its knees. Hank Paulson was at the absolute epicentre of the recent economic storm, and his account of how he dealt with the greatest financial crisis since the Great Depression makes for absolutely fascinating reading. The book contains all the decisive moments in the economic crisis, including the pivotal meetings with mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, as well as Paulson's personal recollections of and conversations with President Bush, President Obama, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and current Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. As well as detailing the major decisions taken during the crisis, Paulson also puts forth the policies he believes need to be implemented to take us securely into the future.

On the Brink: Inside the Race to Stop the Collapse of the Global Financial System Specifications

When Hank Paulson, the former CEO of Goldman Sachs, was appointed in 2006 to become the nation's next Secretary of the Treasury, he knew that his move from Wall Street to Washington would be daunting and challenging.

But Paulson had no idea that a year later, he would find himself at the very epicenter of the world's most cataclysmic financial crisis since the Great Depression. Major institutions including Bear Stearns, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Lehman Brothers, AIG, Merrill Lynch, and Citigroup, among others-all steeped in rich, longstanding tradition-literally teetered at the edge of collapse. Panic ensnared international markets. Worst of all, the credit crisis spread to all parts of the U.S. economy and grew more ominous with each passing day, destroying jobs across America and undermining the financial security millions of families had spent their lifetimes building.

This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime economic nightmare. Events no one had thought possible were happening in quick succession, and people all over the globe were terrified that the continuing downward spiral would bring unprecedented chaos. All eyes turned to the United States Treasury Secretary to avert the disaster.

This, then, is Hank Paulson's first-person account. From the man who was in the very middle of this perfect economic storm, On the Brink is Paulson's fast-paced retelling of the key decisions that had to be made with lightning speed. Paulson puts the reader in the room for all the intense moments as he addressed urgent market conditions, weighed critical decisions, and debated policy and economic considerations with of all the notable players-including the CEOs of top Wall Street firms as well as Ben Bernanke, Timothy Geithner, Sheila Bair, Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank, presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain, and then-President George W. Bush.

More than an account about numbers and credit risks gone bad, On the Brink is an extraordinary story about people and politics-all brought together during the world's impending financial Armageddon.

Read the Author's Note from On the Brink

The pace of events during the financial crisis of 2008 was truly breathtaking. In this book, I have done my best to describe my actions and the thinking behind them during that time, and to convey the breakneck speed at which events were happening all around us.

I believe the most important part of this story is the way Ben Bernanke, Tim Geithner, and I worked as a team through the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. There can't be many other examples of economic leaders managing a crisis who had as much trust in one another as we did. Our partnership proved to be an enormous asset during an incredibly difficult period. But at the same time, this is my story, and as hard as I have tried to reflect the contributions made by everyone involved, it is primarily about my work and that of my talented and dedicated team at Treasury.

--Henry M. Paulson

Amazon Interview: Henry M. Paulson on On the Brink

We spoke with Henry M. Paulson in late January 2010, just before the release of On the Brink. You can listen to parts one and two of the Omnivoracious Podcast of the interview, and read a full transcript, in addition to these excerpts:

Amazon.com: You accepted the job as Treasury secretary in 2006, with some reluctance. Did you have any idea what you were getting into?

Paulson: I had a pretty clear idea that there would be a credit crisis sometime when I was in Washington. And I told the president I thought there'd be one, and the first major meeting I had with him I spent just talking about that topic. But I did not anticipate a crisis of the magnitude we faced--didn't anticipate that at all--and I certainly was bordering on naive in my understanding of the regulatory powers and authorities in Washington.

Amazon.com: You talked about [Ben] Bernanke's great knowledge of history. How much of a guide could history be?

Paulson: I can answer that two ways. First of all, history is a guide in one very real sense: that if you let the financial system collapse, and don't do enough to stave off disaster, the people who are going to suffer, the innocent victims, are going to be the American people. It's not going to be the banks, or the financial sector. So you need to do everything you can to put out the fire before it gets out of control. I think to that extent history was an important guide.

Otherwise, there wasn't much you could learn from history. That's a big lesson, but we were dealing with a financial system and markets very different from what had existed many years ago. Huge concentration in the industry, so if you had two or three firms go down in succession you'd have a domino effect. The whole system could collapse, and it wouldn't take much to have unemployment levels equal to what we had at the Great Depression, and it could happen very quickly. And we didn't have the tools we needed to work with. The regulatory system hadn't been updated since the Great Depression, essentially; the regulatory authorities hadn't. We didn't have the authorities for dealing with major non-banks, and winding them down. So in many ways what were doing was we were dealing with--I said in the book--duct tape and baling wire. We were making do with the authorities we had, which were woefully inadequate.

Amazon.com: And scrambling to get more authories.

Paulson: And scrambling to get more authorities. And in many ways this book is the story of the collision of politics and markets, and it's the story of a race against time to get more authorities. And I think one of the things that really comes through in the book is all of the different elements of the crisis that were coming at us simultaneously.

You could just see it. We could see it and it was one of the most frustrating--when I look at the things I could have done better, there were a lot of them and they come out in the book, but the communications challenges were huge. I mean, I sat there when the capital markets froze, before we went to Congress, and the money markets weren't working, and I just tried to think about how to explain this. Because I knew--I was seeing major, blue-chip industrial companies that were having trouble raising financing, so I knew with .4 trillion of money market funds, and with everything that was just getting ready to break apart, that if the system had collapsed there'd be thousands and thousands and thousands of mainstream industrial companies--middle-sized companies, large companies--that wouldn't be able to raise their short-term funding, finance their inventories, pay their people. People wouldn't have been able to pay their bills. This would have rippled through the economy. We would then have had--well, today we have over 10% unemployment. That's terrible. And that's after everything we've done. If the system had collapsed, when we were on the brink, unemployement easily could have been at the 25% level that we saw at the Great Depression, and the value destruction--much greater than we've had in terms of home prices and in terms of people's savings accounts and stock portfolios and so on.

Amazon.com: And now it looks like 2010 is going to be the year that the Obama administration tackles financial reform. In the last section of your book you mention some lessons that you took out of the crisis.

Paulson: Yeah, this is absolutely critical. And I am not shocked but very unhappy we don't have this yet, because people in this country are angry. Now they're very angry about bonuses and compensation levels on Wall Street, and rightfully so, after everything that's been done to save Wall Street. But what they should be angry about is that we have a system that made this necessary. And so what we need to do is we need to channel some of that anger toward fixing the system so never again do we have major financial institutions that are too big to fail.

Amazon.com: And do you worry that the further we get from the crisis the harder it will be to make those necessary reforms?

Paulson: Of course I do. The thing I worry about the most is I don't want another Treasury secretary to ever be sitting there like I was, without the tools and authorities you need to protect our country, protect our economy, and protect the people. It's a helpless feeling and it's a terrible feeling, and we should never be in this place. Our authorities need to be updated, our financial regulatory structure needs to be updated, and I'm optimistic about the future if we do this.

If we don't, we will have another crisis. You always do. That's the history of mankind. If you go back, as long as we've had banks and financial institutions, there have been excesses, no matter how hard you try to avoid them, and there are going to be financial crises, and we need the tools in place and the regulatory system in place to be able to have a better visibility into what's going on and then be able to put out the fire when it starts, without costing the American people as much as this one did.

I read all 460 pages of this tome. I found very interesting and informative. These pages describe how an unqualified secretary of the Treasury, to kill a tax qualified and highly intelligent and educated Professor of Economics, saving the United States on the verge of a collapse of the national financial system by criminal activities of some members of Congress , the swap resulted in their vote for cash in an envelope.

The book unfortunately does not mention the activitieseconomist Philip Gramm, with consequent abolition of the Glass-Steagall Act, a measure that eventually led to millions of Americans losing their homes. Also does not mention his wife, Wendy Gramm economist who ruled as head of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the trading of derivatives has been subject to regulation. It 'was then sued for 168 million U.S. dollars for his services as a director of Enron. Your opinion free of derivatives regulation lead directly to the crashdescribed in 2008 in this book.

Henry Paulson has a degree in English. This position does not require the study of economics, mathematics, financial or even remotely a challenge. And 'enough to attract the morning and class presentations. He used his background in football meat head and strong verbal skills, working his way up to CEO of Goldman research. It was not a farmer or a money maker, just a talker.

Tim Geithner government and Asian studiesStudies, but also spent time learning to read and write Mandarin. Its main claim to fame was his failure, the United States pay taxes on his income. According to Wikipedia, he defrauded the U.S. of $ 35,000 of self-employment taxes and was assessed additional taxes of $ 14,847 from the IRS. It 'was finally $ 15,000 in interest but not penalties, the IRS allowance - why?. With his friendship with mentor Larry Summers, the dishonorably discharged former president of Harvard, hassucceeded as chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York are. It 'difficult to understand why Obama will appoint a tax cheat as Secretary of the Treasury, with authority over the IRS.

Ben Bernanke brings a new wind in history. Although the book does not specifically point to the intellect of Bernanke, training and experience, knowledge, stability and the decision to the efforts of the United States led in the fourth quarter of 2008 to save.

ThisEfforts with the many sleepless nights, is also described in the book. Exhausting effort, the TARP program, contact the Congress passed, is well presented.

In the final pages of the book, said Paulson's conclusions and recommendations, which are very useful and worthy of implementation. I particularly like his suggestion that there are income tax-a move country to country sales-taxed where consumers pay high taxes and big investors to pay much less. It seems very reasonable.

First Drop of Crimson Swords and tells the story of Denise, the supporting roles are impressive Frost Night Huntress Series. This story fits well into the series very well and followed for an early grave given the time axis. As a big fan of Frost, I am willing to read anything you put in the world, and I was pretty excited for FDOC. I found both Swords and Denise sympathetic characters, though they appeared in Cat and Bones books, read a book about the two of them apparentlyas a requirement for anything. If you have not read Frost's Night series Huntress, I think FDOC can be a bit 'of confusion because they do not spend much time in the background, but if you're not already a fan of Frost and read this book, I'm almost positive you buy and go four his novels. There are some spoilers in the FDOC, but Cat and Bones are also fascinating, if you know more than you should enter,
Frost leads demons in this book, and does it very well. Usnot by demons in other books is one, but would not appear when they reach new ideas and random demons are rarely simple, and avoid, if possible at all. Denise is marked by a demon with a mission to one of their relatives, the discovery made a pact with the demon and denied. Since she knows nothing about demons and tried to distance itself from the world of vampires, since her husband to the crime, you invite their friends vampire. Spade comes to his aid and they begin theirDenise from adventure to a demon to save themselves. I loved the fact that many secondary characters to make appearances here and Bones Cat and Cat and Bones myself at some point. None of the characters differ from their normal personality in the main series, but ripe, and Denise Swords and its happy ending is earned, not rushed, how many romance novels are "extensions. This is really a novel, much more than books Cat, and I admit that did not enjoymuch as the most important series. But I think it's a must-read if you're a fan of Frost and I look forward to reading his next Huntress Night World Book Day, Eternal Kiss of Darkness by Mencher and a human woman, Kira.

A Breath of Snow and Ashes (Outlander)

A Breath of Snow and Ashes (Outlander) Feature

  • ISBN13: 9780440225805
  • Condition: NEW
  • Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark.

A Breath of Snow and Ashes (Outlander) Overview

Eagerly anticipated by her legions of fans, this sixth novel in Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling Outlander saga is a masterpiece of historical fiction from one of the most popular authors of our time.

Since the initial publication of Outlander fifteen years ago, Diana Gabaldon’s New York Times bestselling saga has won the hearts of readers the world over — and sold more than twelve million books. Now, A Breath of Snow and Ashes continues the extraordinary story of 18th-century Scotsman Jamie Fraser and his 20th-century wife, Claire.

The year is 1772, and on the eve of the American Revolution, the long fuse of rebellion has already been lit. Men lie dead in the streets of Boston, and in the backwoods of North Carolina, isolated cabins burn in the forest.

With chaos brewing, the governor calls upon Jamie Fraser to unite the backcountry and safeguard the colony for King and Crown. But from his wife Jamie knows that three years hence the shot heard round the world will be fired, and the result will be independence — with those loyal to the King either dead or in exile. And there is also the matter of a tiny clipping from The Wilmington Gazette, dated 1776, which reports Jamie’s death, along with his kin. For once, he hopes, his time-traveling family may be wrong about the future.

From the Hardcover edition.

Customer Reviews

As a fan of this series, I have long struggled with the Fiery Cross. So much went wrong in The Fiery Cross, I had to force myself to get this book. I'm so glad I did when I Gabaldon learned to know and love and come back.

What was the book that was not repaired in the last job. I was so angry with Brian, Roger, Jem and The Fiery Cross, which I was hoping they would return to his time. By the end of this book, I felt that was his storysolidified and started to carry some weight of its own. Jamie and Claire's relationship is less focused on sex, which I found to be unrealistic and overdone in the last book. The paternity issue is not being mentioned with nearly as much frequency, and mostly gone are the lengthy military matters that made my eyes glaze over. I am so glad Gabaldon downsized her cast of characters and resisted the urge to add so many new characters to the story.

Fans of Gabaldon know she writes in cartoons. The cartoons in the last book was uninteresting and boring and I felt the story was absolutely nothing. Somehow manages to create a bit 'of Snow and Ashes of interest and I found myself reading just another chapter, over and over again. It felt more like the series, which I love, and I was almost in a situation, the Fiery Cross (forgive but not entirely).

I have some criticism for this book. One is the Gabaldon fell in love with the word "cozy" and uses avery large number of times. She, too, with the same images rub-under-the-nose finger over and over again. I think a good editor that this type of lattice models, to call attention to the author, but apparently not. There were a number of places where the threads dropped suddenly and unexpectedly, and I wonder if I missed something.

Overall, a wonderful installment in the Outlander series.

Jamie's Food Revolution: Rediscover How to Cook Simple, Delicious, Affordable Meals

Jamie's Food Revolution: Rediscover How to Cook Simple, Delicious, Affordable Meals Overview

Cooking good food from scratch is a skill that can save you money, keep you healthy, and make you and your family and friends happy. What I've tried to do in this book is pick a whole load of meals that we all love to eat and break them down to make them as simple as possible. There are plenty of clear instructions and step-by-step pictures, so whether you're an accomplished cook or a complete beginner, you'll be able to enjoy cooking and achieve great results in the kitchen.

This book is inspired by all the people I've met who thought they could never and would never learn how to cook. I believe that good home cooking is one of the most essential, fundamental skills that every single person on this planet should have in order to look after themselves, their families, and their friends. This food revolution is all about people learning how to make a recipe, then teaching that recipe to their friends and family . . . if enough people do this, pretty soon everyone will be cooking. So cook something today, then PASS IT ON!

Customer Reviews

I have many episodes of television programs and watch as Jamie Oliver make his love for cooking to the world a better place, enjoyed using. His past successes are admirable. Introduced programs among at-risk youth and teach them a trade (food) that they can get a more productive manner, and create a successful life. She worked with school systems in order to help change the lunch menu will be used by unhealthy foods to fresh produce.

This book represents a further positiveProgram - to encourage those who think they can not cook, can, and show that they have no time for cooking, they think. British commitment to eat what we do here in the U.S. and increasing obesity are the mirror image of what happens when we too often serious burger and fries on the way home from work. Do not lecture, just see convincing arguments for its quick, easy, tasty recipes that can and must prepare wonderful food for usand our family and that does not require a Herculean effort. Cheaper, tastier, healthier, more satisfying and feasible, Jamie Oliver wants to prove to us that cooking from scratch is not something we should consider as an option - it is simply too important.

The book is rich, fast, smart, tasty recipes that require minimal effort with excellent results. In addition to great recipes, this book should be an example for all writers, to serve as a cookbookproper build a user-friendly cookbook. This book succeeds on so many levels. The paper is glossy and buried high-quality ingredients with the sides should clean easily. The incredibly durable sewn binding open in September, while the flat on a work surface in almost every position. The hardcover is made to last. The only thing missing is the nutritional information, but unfortunately this is usually the case. I guess because the grams of fat, calories, etc., detailed, and each recipewith many software programs that automatically calculates the information is, the effort is minimal and publishers would be wise to put all cookery books.

most unusual to find, but always as useful are the photographs of the exhibition covers extensive course before beginning the final result. And the total index on the back of the book, a real time saver so that every recipe on the basis of their main ingredient is to be located.

Within many of the recipes areProposals for ingredients that can be added or removed or replaced. Flexible, versatile and informal, the book is full of surprises and foundations. During the summer I often ice, so I'm always looking for new combinations. Jamie took the chocolate ice cream, the addition of fresh pineapple and a little 'fresh chopped chili. Yum. I prepared the recipe scones with fruit and muesli Quick microwave steam pudding cake - and all were delicious. I also tried hisProcess for preparing perfect rice, and the results were incredibly soft. In the future, that the method I used for each batch.

I would buy this book as a gift for every cook and would make a particularly good reference for a new chef, Because it is clearly designed for easy cooking and entertaining. This book is a keeper.
