The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook: A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal

The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook: A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal Overview

The high-energy tale of how two socially awkward Ivy Leaguers, trying to increase their chances with the opposite sex, ended up creating Facebook.

Eduardo Saverin and Mark Zuckerberg were Harvard undergraduates and best friends–outsiders at a school filled with polished prep-school grads and long-time legacies. They shared both academic brilliance in math and a geeky awkwardness with women.

Eduardo figured their ticket to social acceptance–and sexual success–was getting invited to join one of the university’s Final Clubs, a constellation of elite societies that had groomed generations of the most powerful men in the world and ranked on top of the inflexible hierarchy at Harvard. Mark, with less of an interest in what the campus alpha males thought of him, happened to be a computer genius of the first order.

Which he used to find a more direct route to social stardom: one lonely night, Mark hacked into the university's computer system, creating a ratable database of all the female students on campus–and subsequently crashing the university's servers and nearly getting himself kicked out of school. In that moment, in his Harvard dorm room, the framework for Facebook was born.

What followed–a real-life adventure filled with slick venture capitalists, stunning women, and six-foot-five-inch identical-twin Olympic rowers–makes for one of the most entertaining and compelling books of the year. Before long, Eduardo’s and Mark’s different ideas about Facebook created in their relationship faint cracks, which soon spiraled into out-and-out warfare. The collegiate exuberance that marked their collaboration fell prey to the adult world of lawyers and money. The great irony is that while Facebook succeeded by bringing people together, its very success tore two best friends apart.

The Accidental Billionaires is a compulsively readable story of innocence lost–and of the unusual creation of a company that has revolutionized the way hundreds of millions of people relate to one another.

Ben Mezrich, a Harvard graduate, has published ten books, including the New York Times bestseller Bringing Down the House. He is a columnist for Boston Common and a contributor for Flush magazine. Ben lives in Boston with his wife, Tonya.

Read his exclusive Amazon guest review of The Accidental Billionaires:

I first met Ben Mezrich when I produced and starred in 21, the film adaptation of his great bestseller Bringing Down the House. Ben has a gift for finding high-energy, strange-but-true tales and The Accidental Billionaires is no exception.

You may think you know the story of the Facebook phenomenon, but you haven’t heard the whole story and never like this. Recreating the unbelievable rise of the world's biggest social network—not to mention the planet's youngest billionaire, Mark Zuckerberg—Ben tells a captivating story of betrayal, vast amounts of cash, and two friends who revolutionized the way humans connect to one another—only to have an enormous falling out and never speak again.

Eduardo Saverin and Mark Zuckerberg were two geeky, socially awkward Harvard undergrads who wanted nothing more than to be cool. While Eduardo chose the more straightforward path of trying to gain acceptance into one of the school's ultra-posh, semi-secret Final Clubs, Mark used his computer skills by hacking into Harvard's computers, pulling up all the pictures of every girl on campus to create a sort of "hot-or-not" site exclusive to Harvard. Though the prank nearly got Mark kicked out of college, he and Eduardo realized that they were on to something big. Thus, the initial concept of Facebook was born; what happened next, however, was right out of a Hollywood thriller.

The Accidental Billionaires is the perfect pairing of author and subject. It's pure summer fun—a juicy, fast-paced, unputdownable Mezrich tale that adds to his canon of lad lit. And Hollywood has come calling again: I'm currently working with Dana Brunetti, Scott Rudin, Mike Deluca, and Aaron Sorkin on the movie adaptation of The Accidental Billionaires. If the book is any indication, the film is going to be a must see.—Kevin Spacey

This story is about the birth of Facebook as a major motion picture is released, I thought I'd read the whole story (I'm sure the film is compact for a lot of detail) first. Maybe I have a bit 'of an entrepreneurial dream - I flirted, like many, with daydreams and nearly ideas for websites the world (the change, in fact, I have some step along the road on a path Some `em ). and I have some good friends, the deep, deep in the big launch of aOnline business software that could really revolutionize the work. So I came to this history with this type of interest. mostly true (some fact, some reasonable assumptions), is an easy and fun to read. but there are some real pain in the story too, and the error is not obvious to someone shoes: there are many gray areas, with different positions would shift to the right and wrong. go ahead and use Facebook without knowing the story of creation - it does not affect the useExperience less. but the story is good. not a must-read, to be sure, but still enjoyable.

Deliver Us From Evil by David Baldacci

Not my favorite book Baldacci, but still a thrilling ride, never lets up action. The violence was too graphic for my taste and the plot is not plausible, but I'm willing to suspend reality for the sake of a good story. However, the villain was able to pull too many tricks from the hat, and I'm not convinced that money and all the library could accomplish. That is, all of Baldacci's books, among which are above average in comparisonwhat we read today. He is a good writer and storyteller.

Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary

Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary Overview

Featuring David Sedaris's unique blend of hilarity and heart, this new collection of keen-eyed animal-themed tales is an utter delight. Though the characters may not be human, the situations in these stories bear an uncanny resemblance to the insanity of everyday life.

In "The Toad, the Turtle, and the Duck," three strangers commiserate about animal bureaucracy while waiting in a complaint line. In "Hello Kitty," a cynical feline struggles to sit through his prison-mandated AA meetings. In "The Squirrel and the Chipmunk," a pair of star-crossed lovers is separated by prejudiced family members.

With original illustrations by Ian Falconer, author of the bestselling Olivia series of children's books, these stories are David Sedaris at his most observant, poignant, and surprising.

Bright of the Sky (Book 1 of The Entire and the Rose) Overview

Kay Kenyon, noted for her science fiction world-building, has in this new series created her most vivid and compelling society, the Universe Entire. In a land-locked galaxy that tunnels through our own, the Entire is a bizarre and seductive mix of long-lived quasi-human and alien beings gathered under a sky of fire, called the bright. A land of wonders, the Entire is sustained by monumental storm walls and an exotic, never-ending river. Over all, the elegant and cruel Tarig rule supreme.

Into this rich milieu is thrust Titus Quinn, former star pilot, bereft of his beloved wife and daughter who are assumed dead by everyone on earth except Quinn. Believing them trapped in a parallel universe--one where he himself may have been imprisoned--he returns to the Entire without resources, language, or his memories of that former life. He is assisted by Anzi, a woman of the Chalin people, a Chinese culture copied from our own universe and transformed by the kingdom of the bright. Learning of his daughter's dreadful slavery, Quinn swears to free her. To do so, he must cross the unimaginable distances of the Entire in disguise, for the Tarig are lying in wait for him. As Quinn's memories return, he discovers why. Quinn's goal is to penetrate the exotic culture of the Entire--to the heart of Tarig power, the fabulous city of the Ascendancy, to steal the key to his family's redemption.

But will his daughter and wife welcome rescue? Ten years of brutality have forced compromises on everyone. What Quinn will learn to his dismay is what his own choices were, long ago, in the Universe Entire. He will also discover why a fearful multiverse destiny is converging on him and what he must sacrifice to oppose the coming storm.

This is high-concept SF written on the scale of Philip Jose Farmer's Riverworld, Roger Zelazny's Amber Chronicles, and Dan Dimmons's Hyperion.

I'm almost done with the third book in this series and I'm really enjoying it. I have the first book for free on the Kindle and liked well enough to get the rest of the books in the series. Many reviews have pointed out the irritatingly abrupt scenes and speakers. This must be fixed, because I found only one abrupt change, and that was in the third book in Kindle editions. The reviewer, who was in "heroes" the killing of a foreign "child" was angry with the series too soon. ItsMortification and guilt for the accident is an important issue throughout history.

I love the way the author has used modern ideas in physics to develop the story. I recently TV PBS and The History Channel on string theory, the possibility of many other universes enclosed in "membranes" and as the time differences and Decisions seen in my life could the lives of people on "the other side of membranes interfere. "The author gives credit to people in the physics community that helpedthese problems, and they mix well.

The author cuts back and forth between what happens to other people's story is also good. Sometimes you do not want to leave the action part of the story to see what happens to others until they have the character we recognize it, then it is like, "Oh yeah, Sydney (or Johanna or Caitlin, or Quinn) needs Help - I wonder how he / she get out of this problem! "

No character is a saint andPart of the mystery in progress "so and so appear to be deceived, before it is too late to change their way of destroying the earth or their fault (or all)?" Shifts and treachery abound, the characters make mistakes, the solutions found in recent times, dear may be dead or lost forever, but there is always the possibility that it can be saved by the sacrifice and love the pink and all family. And if Quinn has lost his family in the process that will be on the iceCake.

Comedy in a Minor Key: A Novel Overview

A penetrating study of ordinary people resisting the Nazi occupation—and, true to its title, a dark comedy of wartime manners—Comedy in a Minor Key tells the story of Wim and Marie, a Dutch couple who first hide a Jew they know as Nico, then must dispose of his body when he dies of pneumonia. This novella, first published in 1947 and now translated into English for the first time, shows Hans Keilson at his best: deeply ironic, penetrating, sympathetic, and brilliantly modern, an heir to Joseph Roth and Franz Kafka. In 2008, when Keilson received Germany’s prestigious Welt Literature Prize, the citation praised his work for exploring “the destructive impulse at work in the twentieth century, down to its deepest psychological and spiritual ramifications.”

Published to celebrate Keilson’s hundredth birthday, Comedy ina Minor Key—and The Death of the Adversary, reissued in paperback—will introduce American readers to a forgotten classic author, a witness to World War II and a sophisticated storyteller whose books remain as fresh as when they first came to light.

Customer Reviews

Comedy in child tells the story of a young Dutch couple, Wim and Marie, Nico, a perfume merchant jew in his spare bedroom to hide for a year during the Second World War. Wim for their generosity and Mary is not out of passion or political response to injustice is born, but a sense of decency and good-neighborly friendship. In contrast to the heroic stories about the war and the strength of the rebel challenge, Wim and Marie naively stumble by the clumsiness of a foreign body in flightthe enemy. The heaviness of life of hiding with an unknown and risky to take a dangerous turn when you pass by the disease, and the two are forced to have her body.

Hans Keilson enjoyed renewed attention with the English-speaking readers through the first English translation of the play in a minor key, although it was originally published in 1947, and the new edition of his book The Death of the enemy. This slim book (only 135 pages) tells a quietdarkly funny story about human compassion, the astonishing and deeply affected.

What I find so exciting about this work, ironically breaks expectations. As Marie says the man who hid "He defended himself against death from the outside, and then led him to think. It 'was like a comedy, which is expected to result, the hero on the stage, which resolution right out .. And who is left "by Wim, Marie, and Nico, theirActions are not the hero. Marie feels his concealment of his customers are offended fumbles operations Wim trivial or secret, and Nico committing selfish acts. In their effort to do something great, punctuated the life in all its frustrations and accidents.

Keilson skillfully reveals the reality of three deeply human characters live in a impossible situation alienating. This short novel reads smoothly and feels deeply contemporary - with all the existentialabsurdity of a Beckett play and the character flaws of a novel by Jonathan Franzen. Comedy in C minor, is a rare find, and I am deeply grateful that it was finally published here.

In this dramatic first-person narrative, Greg Mortenson picks up where Three Cups of Tea left off in 2003, recounting his relentless, ongoing efforts to establish schools for girls in Afghanistan; his extensive work in Azad Kashmir and Pakistan after a massive earthquake hit the region in 2005; and the unique ways he has built relationships with Islamic clerics, militia commanders, and tribal leaders even as he was dodging shootouts with feuding Afghan warlords and surviving an eight-day armed abduction by the Taliban. I loved this book. I think it's better than almost all the secrets of writing I have ever read. It 'started slowly and then built into a climax nails. If I found a mistake (and it was very small), there was not much on the personality of the characters, except, naturally, Jason. Perhaps because the rich do not have much personality. I do not know. If you want power, I guarantee you will not be disappointed in this novel.
