The World Set Free is a novel published in 1914 by HG Wells. The book is planned as a nuclear weapon.
A constant theme of the work Wells, advances in 1901 non-fiction, was the effect of energy and technological progress as a determinant of human progress. The novel begins: "Human history is the history of the attainment of external power.Man is the instrument by fire animal. "

Scientists at the time were well aware that the slow natural decay of radioactive elements like radium for thousands of years continue, and that while the rate of energy release is negligible, the total amount granted enormous. Wells uses this as the basis for his story.
